With the composition ‚Folies d‘Espagne‘ by Marin Marais (1656-1728) Monika Thiery and Eric Plandé refer to Cervantes‘ Don Quixote.
Like Don Quixote in the story from Cervantes, Marais refused to allow the passage of time, developments in music, new harmonies and movements, and even went so far as to forbid his students to play sonatas by the famous composer Domenico Scarlatti. “It was “A fight against windmills,” but the only way he could leave his ideals and original ideas in this compositions for us.
The original composition of Marais is played first, in the course of which variations and new playing techniques are added, leading them from the past into the present.
